Apple has released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, significant updates to its mobile operating systems. The new software introduces major enhancements to cross-platform messaging, along with notable improvements to the Maps application and system personalization options. These updates arrive as Apple prepares for its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
The headline feature of iOS 26.5 is the integration of end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the Messages app. This development marks a substantial upgrade for communication between iPhone and Android users, which previously defaulted to the less secure and feature-limited SMS/MMS standards.
Unlike standard SMS, RCS supports higher-resolution photos and videos, read receipts, and typing indicators. With the addition of E2EE, conversations using this protocol now benefit from a level of security comparable to Apple's proprietary iMessage service. Users can verify the encryption through a small lock symbol within the message thread. The rollout of this feature is dependent on carrier support and will become available to users gradually.
The Maps application receives a new "Suggested Places" section. This feature provides users with recommendations for nearby points of interest based on their current location, recent search history, and trending places in the area. The update also includes the underlying framework for advertisements, which are expected to be integrated into the Maps app in the near future.
In addition to functional updates, iOS 26.5 introduces a new "Pride Luminance" wallpaper. This dynamic background complements the corresponding Apple Watch face and band, refracting a spectrum of colors as the user interacts with their device. Apple has also provided security updates for older devices unable to run iOS 26, ensuring broader device protection. As the development cycle for iOS 26 concludes, industry focus now shifts to the expected unveiling of iOS 27.
