Google has announced a significant update for Google TV, integrating a new wave of features powered by its Gemini artificial intelligence model. The update introduces advanced creative tools, enhances photo management capabilities, and integrates short-form video directly onto the home screen, shifting the platform from a passive content viewer to an interactive creative hub.
The centerpiece of the update is the introduction of generative AI tools, Nano Banana and Veo, accessible via a “Create” button within the Gemini tab. These features are initially rolling out on Gemini-enabled TCL TVs in the United States. Nano Banana is an image-generation and editing model that allows users to modify photos using simple voice prompts, such as changing backgrounds or altering outfits. In contrast, Veo is a video generation tool that can create short clips from scratch or animate still images based on descriptive text prompts. While both tools leverage generative AI for creative output, Nano Banana focuses on editing existing images, whereas Veo specializes in generating new video content.
Google Photos on the platform is also receiving a substantial upgrade through Gemini integration. A new AI-powered search function enables users to find specific memories, such as vacations or birthdays, using natural language queries. The results are presented in a browsable format for easy viewing. Additionally, a “Remix” feature allows for the application of artistic styles like watercolor or oil painting to personal photos. For a more engaging viewing experience, “Dynamic Slideshows” introduce animated layouts, frames, and color treatments, turning any photo collection into a vivid, TV-ready presentation.
Recognizing the trend of short-form content, Google is adding a new “Short videos for you” row to the Google TV home screen. This feed will initially feature content from YouTube Shorts. This move aims to bring the popular mobile video format to the living room's larger screen. While user demand for Shorts has been mixed on other platforms, Google has indicated that this feature could expand in the future to include content from other services, following the recent expansion of Instagram's TV app to Google TV devices.
