Bungie is set to introduce a "PvE-only mode" for its recently launched game, Marathon, as part of a broader effort to address player feedback and improve the overall game experience. This significant shift aims to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience, moving beyond its initial PvP-centric focus.
Marathon's upcoming Season 2 will feature two new experimental game modes. The first, available at the season's start, will have a "touch of PvP" but will primarily focus on PvE elements. The second is a "PvE-only mode" designed for crews to collaborate on objectives and make progress across multiple matches.
Game director Joe Ziegler described these as experiments, with the potential for them to become permanent fixtures in the game's core loop. Bungie also indicated the possibility of introducing more purely PvP-focused modes in the future.
Bungie acknowledges that Marathon can be "overwhelming to learn," leading to frustration for players who struggle with the initial learning curve, lack a consistent team, or are not highly skilled. Ziegler noted that matches can feel like a "death spiral" for some, with challenges in faction progress and resource acquisition, especially for solo players.
To combat this, Season 2 will begin addressing these issues. Bungie has plans extending to Season 5, including new runners, weapons, improved new-player experiences, and expanded world-building. Specific improvements will target extraction risks, matchmaking systems with "different dimensions," user experience enhancements for smoother goal-setting and match entry, and a revamped contract system to boost progression.
Season 4 will concentrate on deepening the existing extraction loop, while Season 5 aims to integrate the entire ecosystem of play and evolve the game's sci-fi world. Season 2 is slated to launch on June 2, coinciding with the game's first wipe. Despite initial challenges, Bungie appears committed to refining Marathon and expanding its appeal.
