Ineos Automotive has unveiled a military prototype based on its Grenadier 4x4, aiming to secure the contract to replace the British Ministry of Defence's (MoD) long-serving Land Rover fleet. This new vehicle, the Military Reconnaissance Light Vehicle (MRLV), is a serious contender. Here is a breakdown of what you need to know.
The MRLV is a purpose-built military version of the civilian Ineos Grenadier. It has been strategically modified to meet the demanding requirements of a modern light military vehicle. It is one of several vehicles, including entries from Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota, competing for the important MoD contract.
The MRLV keeps the Grenadier's core platform but upgrades key hardware for military use.
| Area | Standard Grenadier basis | MRLV military version |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Civilian 4x4 foundation | Adapted for military requirements |
| Running gear | Standard-duty components | Heavier-duty chassis, axles, wheels, and tires |
| Suspension | Conventional setup | Height-adjustable air suspension |
| Durability validation | Regular civilian use case | Nearly 200,000 miles of punishing tests |
| Operational goal | Off-road utility | Combat-environment resilience |
The MRLV's strengths lie in its power, versatility, and logistical simplicity. It can tow up to 4.5 tonnes, a full tonne more than the MoD's 3.5-tonne requirement. Its engine can be adjusted to run on lower-grade fuels, including aviation turbine fuel, and operate without AdBlue exhaust fluid. This simplifies fuel supply in remote operational areas. With an optional 220-litre fuel tank, its operational range extends to an impressive 1000 miles. Furthermore, its design allows for various body configurations, from a single-cab pickup to other specialized layouts.

With the optional 220-litre tank, the MRLV's range becomes a major operational advantage for remote deployments.
Ineos is not alone in this bid. The Grenadier MRLV faces strong competition from established players.
Expected to propose a military version derived from the new Defender.
Toyota is in the running with an entry based on its proven Land Cruiser and Hilux underpinnings.
The American defense contractor is also viewed as a credible rival for this type of military procurement.
The MoD is expected to make its final decision on the new vehicle before the end of the year.
