A new contender has entered the European automotive market, blending the rugged aesthetics of iconic off-road vehicles with modern capabilities. Indimo Automotive is introducing the BAW 212 pickup truck to Europe, aiming to capture the interest of buyers seeking robust performance and distinctive styling at a competitive price point.
The BAW 212 presents a striking visual package, drawing heavily from the previous generation Land Rover Defender pickup for its body and cab. The front end, however, takes inspiration from the classic Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, creating a unique, albeit derivative, aesthetic. Despite its retro influences, the truck features contemporary touches like LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and includes side steps for easier access. The rear houses circular taillights and a 5.1-foot (1,555 mm) long bed.
Measuring 215.3 inches (5,469 mm) in length, the BAW 212 is a substantial vehicle, comparable in size to the Jeep Gladiator, offering ample space for its intended purpose.
Inside, the BAW 212 offers a more contemporary experience. Drivers are greeted by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Euro-spec model comes generously equipped with heated and ventilated front seats, featuring 10-way power adjustment for the driver. While the seats are upholstered in artificial leather, the steering wheel is wrapped in genuine leather. Additional amenities include a wireless smartphone charger, an eight-speaker audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control, complemented by metallic accents and a generous array of physical controls.
Under the hood, the BAW 212 is powered by a 2.3-liter turbodiesel engine that delivers 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, enabling a top speed of 99 mph (160 km/h).
Where the BAW 212 truly aims to impress is in its off-road capabilities. Built on a ladder frame with rigid axles, it features locking front, center, and rear differentials. With 9.8 inches (250 mm) of ground clearance, it surpasses many competitors. The truck also offers an extensive selection of drive modes, including Standard, Eco, Sport, Snow, Sand, Rock, Mud, Wading, Mountain, and Bumpy, alongside features like cruise control, park distance control, and a 360° camera system.
The BAW 212 is set to launch in Germany with a starting price of €41,995 ($49,200) including VAT. This positions it as a significantly more affordable option compared to the Ford Ranger Double Cab (starting at €46,590 before VAT) and the Toyota Hilux (starting at €46,386.20 including VAT), making it an attractive proposition for European consumers seeking a capable and stylish off-road pickup.
