Lotus has officially announced the return of its legendary Esprit supercar as a key part of its ambitious "Focus 2030" plan. Contrary to some expectations, the new Esprit will not be an all-electric vehicle but will instead feature a powerful hybrid V8 powertrain. This strategic move aims to revitalize the brand and re-establish its position in the high-performance automotive market.
Lotus has confirmed that the upcoming hybrid V8 supercar, internally codenamed Type 135, will indeed be named the Esprit. This revelation, while not explicitly stated in Lotus's initial "Focus 2030" press release, was inadvertently revealed through image filenames provided to the media. One of the teaser image files was clearly labeled "Esprit_Teaser."
The new Esprit is set to be a technological marvel, boasting a hybrid V8 powertrain capable of generating more than 1000 metric horsepower. While specific details are scarce, the teaser image suggests design cues inspired by the Theory 1 concept car, particularly in its rear light configuration and material usage.
The "Focus 2030" plan is a comprehensive strategy designed to steer Lotus back towards profitability and operational efficiency. A significant aspect of this plan involves closer collaboration with parent company Geely Holdings Group. This partnership aims to leverage economies of scale and simplify supply chains, ultimately reducing costs.
Furthermore, Lotus UK and Lotus Technology will be merged into a single entity. This consolidation is expected to unify the brand, streamline governance, cut expenses, and accelerate the development of next-generation performance vehicles.
While the new Esprit will be a hybrid V8, Lotus is also advancing its electric vehicle technology. The "X-Hybrid" powertrain system, set to debut in the Eletre towards the end of 2026 in Europe, offers impressive performance with up to 939bhp and a remarkable claimed driving range of over 745 miles. The Eletre, Emeya, and Evija will continue to be central to Lotus's product lineup.
Daniel Li, executive vice chairman of Geely Holding Group, expressed unwavering commitment to Lotus, stating, "Geely has believed in Lotus from the beginning, and that belief has not wavered. We’re committed to giving Lotus the resources it needs to compete at the highest level."
The production of the new Esprit is scheduled for 2028, with manufacturing to take place in Europe, though the specific location has not yet been disclosed. This marks a significant step in Lotus's journey to redefine its future.
