McLaren Reveals MCL-HY Racer and Its More Potent GTR Twin

McLaren has announced its return to the top tier of endurance racing with the new MCL-HY FIA Hypercar, set to compete in the 2027 World Endurance Championship (WEC). Alongside the race car, the company unveiled the MCL-HY GTR, an exclusive track-only version for a select group of customers.

A Tale of Two Hypercars

The MCL-HY project features two distinct models built on the same foundation. The MCL-HY FIA Hypercar is designed to comply with the strict regulations of the Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) class, including a mandatory hybrid system.

In contrast, the MCL-HY GTR is a customer version free from these racing rules. This allows it to be lighter and more powerful than its racing counterpart. McLaren developed the GTR as a joint effort between its Racing and Automotive divisions, creating a machine that shares no components with its road cars.

Power and Drivetrain Analysis

The core of both vehicles is a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine. The key difference lies in the powertrain configuration. The FIA race car uses a hybrid system, where the combined output of the engine and electric motor is capped at 697 horsepower (520 kW) to ensure a level playing field with competitors.

The GTR model, however, omits the hybrid system entirely. This decision allows its V6 engine to produce a full 720 horsepower (537 kW). By removing the heavy batteries and electric motors, the GTR is also significantly lighter than the race car's minimum weight of 1,030 kg (2,270 lbs), offering a purer driving experience without the complexity of a hybrid setup.

Shared Design and Aerodynamics

Both the racer and the GTR share an identical carbon fiber monocoque chassis and aggressive exterior styling. The design is dictated by aerodynamics, featuring a long wheelbase, a teardrop-shaped cockpit, and prominent aerodynamic elements. These include large openings in the front fenders, a central stability fin, and a massive rear wing with integrated LED taillights. The prototype race car is shown in a classic orange livery, while the GTR is finished in silver with orange highlights.

Market Position and Ownership

The MCL-HY GTR will be offered through an exclusive "Project: Endurance" program. Ownership includes a comprehensive two-year track schedule, professional driver coaching, and support from a dedicated race engineering team and pit crew. McLaren has not disclosed the price or the total number of units to be produced, but it has confirmed that the car will be available by invitation only to a small number of clients, with first deliveries expected in late 2027. For the racing division, the MCL-HY represents a new effort to win Le Mans and complete the "Triple Crown of Motorsports" for the modern era.
