The electric vehicle market is about to see a new contender. Chinese brand Leapmotor, in a joint venture with automotive group Stellantis, is preparing to launch the B03, a new electric supermini. This vehicle is aimed squarely at the heart of the affordable EV segment, with a planned UK market entry in early 2027.

What is the Leapmotor B03?

The Leapmotor B03 is a compact, all-electric supermini. It is built on the company's new entry-level A platform, which it shares with the B03X crossover. Through the Stellantis partnership, Leapmotor's vehicles will be sold internationally, positioning the B03 as a global product designed to compete with established European brands.

What are its key technical specifications?

The B03 will feature a front-mounted motor with two-wheel drive. It is expected to be offered with two power outputs: a 94bhp version and a more powerful 121bhp option. For energy storage, there will be a choice between a 39.8kWh battery and a larger 53kWh battery. Both will use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, a technology known for its durability and lower production cost compared to other battery types.

How does its performance and range compare?

Official range figures have not been finalized, but projections are strong. The related B03X crossover achieves 250 miles of range with the larger 53kWh battery. Given that the B03 is a smaller, lower, and more aerodynamic supermini, it is expected to exceed that figure. This could give it one of the longest driving ranges in its class, a significant advantage for a vehicle at its projected price point.

How does it stack up against competitors?

The B03 is positioned to directly challenge upcoming models like the Renault 5 and the electric successor to the Volkswagen Polo. Its primary competitive edge will be its price. While not yet confirmed, the B03 could launch with a starting price below £20,000. This would significantly undercut its European rivals, making it a compelling option for buyers looking for an affordable entry into electric vehicle ownership.

What can be expected from its design and interior?

The exterior styling of the B03 is rounded and modern, sharing a clear family resemblance with other Leapmotor models. As a supermini, it is visibly shorter and has a lower profile than its crossover sibling. The interior is expected to follow the current industry trend of minimalism, with most vehicle controls and infotainment functions consolidated into a large central touchscreen, creating a clean and uncluttered dashboard.
