AMD Extends FSR 4.1 Support to RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 Architectures

AMD has announced a significant expansion of its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4.1 technology, extending its availability to graphics cards based on the older RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures. This move aims to bring modern performance-enhancing features to a broader range of hardware, including popular devices like the Steam Deck.

Phased Rollout Across GPU Generations

The deployment of FSR 4.1 to older GPUs will occur in stages. Following its initial launch for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards in March, the technology is scheduled to arrive for RDNA 3-based GPUs, specifically the Radeon RX 7000-series, in July. Subsequently, a wider release for hardware utilizing the RDNA 2 architecture is planned for early 2027. This phased approach allows AMD to focus on optimization for each specific architecture. The RDNA 2 expansion is particularly notable as it includes a large install base of graphics cards and integrated systems.

Technical Adaptation for Legacy Hardware

FSR 4.1 is an AI-powered upscaling technology designed to increase frame rates and enhance visual fidelity in supported games. Its primary function is to render games at a lower internal resolution and then intelligently upscale the image to the target display resolution, resulting in smoother gameplay without a significant loss in image quality. A key technical challenge in this expansion is that RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures do not possess the same dedicated AI hardware found in the latest GPUs. According to Jack Huynh, AMD’s head of computing and graphics, this required the company to "carefully tune, optimize, and validate the model" to ensure stable and effective performance on the older chips. This optimization process involved extensive testing across hundreds of PC configurations and games.

Impact on the Gaming Ecosystem

By backporting FSR 4.1, AMD is effectively extending the viable lifespan of its previous-generation hardware. Gamers with Radeon RX 7000-series and, eventually, RDNA 2-based systems will gain access to performance improvements in over 300 supported titles, including prominent games like Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This strategy not only provides tangible benefits to existing customers but also strengthens AMD's position in the market by demonstrating long-term product support. The inclusion of devices like the Steam Deck in the RDNA 2 rollout is a significant value-add for the handheld gaming community.
