Meta is introducing a new "Incognito Chat" feature for its AI chatbot on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, promising a secure environment for sensitive conversations. This move comes shortly after the company discontinued end-to-end encrypted direct messages on Instagram, raising questions about Meta's evolving approach to user privacy.
Meta announced on Wednesday that its new Incognito Chat feature aims to provide users with a secure space to interact with its AI chatbot. The company suggests this feature will allow users to discuss topics like health, finances, or career advice with Meta AI without concern for their conversations being viewed by others. Meta stated that unlike other incognito modes, Incognito Chat with Meta AI is "truly private, meaning no one — not even Meta — can read your conversations."
The technology underpinning Incognito Chat is WhatsApp's Private Processing, introduced last year. This system is designed to enable optional AI privacy features by allowing users to request a confidential and secure environment for their AI interactions. In the case of Incognito Chat, messages are encrypted and processed in a secure environment that Meta claims it cannot access. Furthermore, these conversations are not saved by default and messages disappear on their own.
The feature is slated for a rollout on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app in the coming months. Meta also previewed "Sidechat," another feature utilizing the same private processing technology. Sidechat will enable users to privately use Meta AI within a WhatsApp conversation without disrupting the main chat, potentially allowing users to ask the AI for summaries or insights related to their ongoing conversations with real people.
The introduction of these new privacy-focused AI features occurs less than a week after Meta ceased support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages on Instagram. The company officially ended this support on May 8, advising users to save any important media or messages. For users seeking end-to-end encrypted messaging, Meta now directs them to WhatsApp.
A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision to remove encrypted DMs from Instagram was due to "very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs." The spokesperson reiterated that users who wish to continue using end-to-end encryption can do so easily on WhatsApp.
This juxtaposition of discontinuing encrypted DMs on one platform while promoting encrypted AI interactions on another highlights Meta's strategic adjustments in its privacy offerings and messaging strategies.
