Apple has officially rolled out iOS 26.5, a significant update that brings a highly anticipated feature to iPhone users: end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging. This update, available for iPhones from 2019 onwards, also includes crucial security patches and new customization options, alongside region-specific features for EU users.
After extensive beta testing, iOS 26.5 introduces end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging. This feature, a collaborative effort between Apple and Google, aims to enhance the privacy and security of messages exchanged between iPhones and Android devices. While blue bubble messages between iPhones have long been encrypted, this update extends that protection to cross-platform communication. Users will notice a lock icon in their RCS chats to confirm encryption is active. The rollout is dependent on carrier support and is being enabled gradually.
Beyond messaging enhancements, iOS 26.5 addresses over 50 security vulnerabilities. Notably, several critical fixes target the iOS Kernel and WebKit, the engine powering Safari. These updates also patch a vulnerability that could have allowed malicious apps to bypass security sandboxes, ensuring a more secure user experience.
The update includes a new "Pride Luminance" wallpaper, which Apple describes as dynamically refracting a spectrum of colors. For users in the U.S., the Maps application now features "Suggested Places," offering recommendations based on trending local spots and recent searches.
In compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act, iOS 26.5 introduces new functionalities for users in the European Union. Third-party wearables can now access features previously exclusive to Apple Watch and AirPods, such as proximity pairing for earbuds and receiving iPhone notifications on third-party smartwatches. Live Activities from the iPhone can also now be displayed on compatible third-party wearables.
