SwitchBot has introduced Kata Friends, a new line of AI-powered pet robots named Noa and Niko. These companions are designed to learn and evolve based on user interaction, offering a lifelike presence without the mess or maintenance of traditional pets. Featuring on-device AI, they can interact and respond even without Wi-Fi.

Key Takeaways

Intelligent Interaction and Behavior

Noa, the energetic white-furred robot, and Niko, the gentle gray-furred one, are equipped with sophisticated hardware. Their LCD eyes display multiple colors and expressions, and they can navigate independently using wheels and sensors. With 12 touch-sensitive zones, they react to petting and touch with physical movements and sounds. Their AI allows them to recognize people, respond to voice commands, and even interpret vocal emotions, mirroring joy with cheerful tones.

These AI pets follow users around the room, come when called, and can even wake users up with a song. They remember individual household members, personalizing their interactions. A button on their head allows switching between normal, standby, and sleep modes. For privacy, an included eye mask can be used to disable their cameras and sensors, putting them into a privacy mode.

Memory and Photography

Kata Friends maintain a diary of their interactions, storing memories locally within a companion app. Users can prompt the robots to take photos with specific gestures or voice commands, capturing shared moments. These images are saved locally, offering a digital memento of the user's time with their AI companion.

The Kata Friends are available for $700, with a required subscription plan. The essential plan costs $15 per month or $150 annually, offering AI and software access. A premium plan is available for $400 per year, which includes repair services, health check-ups, and grooming. A free six-month essential plan is included with purchases until June 12.
