CD Projekt Red has surprised the gaming world with the announcement of a new story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled "Songs of the Past," slated for a 2027 release. While new content for the beloved 2015 RPG is welcome news, the announcement was accompanied by updated PC system requirements that have stirred discussion among the community.
The update introduces several notable platform and hardware changes, with the operating system requirement drawing the most attention.
| Category | Previous Support | Expansion Requirement / Status |
|---|---|---|
| Consoles | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch versions existed | Expansion will not release on those platforms |
| Storage | Older storage setups still common | SSD expected |
| Memory | Lower specs were previously workable | 12GB RAM required |
| Operating system | Windows 10 remained supported for the base game era | Windows 11 officially required for the new content |
The shift away from Windows 10, an operating system still widely used by PC gamers, was met with immediate concern. Online forums saw players questioning the necessity of a "mandatory Windows 11" environment. In response, CD Projekt Red clarified its position on the game's official forums. The studio explained that while the game may still function on Windows 10, they will not be testing for or guaranteeing its performance on the older OS. "Our goal is not to take something away from you," the developer stated. "Our goal is to give you what is best the best way we can."
Viewed over time, the decision follows a wider support transition already underway across the PC ecosystem.
The original RPG arrives in an era when older hardware and operating systems remain part of the mainstream PC audience.
Microsoft is scheduled to stop security updates, making long-term support for Windows 10 increasingly difficult.
Major hardware makers such as Nvidia are expected to stop releasing new Windows 10 GPU drivers before the expansion arrives.
By the time "Songs of the Past" launches, focusing development on Windows 11 looks less like a sudden break and more like the industry endpoint of an ongoing transition.
Players effectively face two paths as the release approaches: move forward with newer software and hardware, or fall back to an older version if compatibility becomes an issue.
Players who do not upgrade may lose reliable compatibility with future updates, but CD Projekt Red says they will be able to revert to an older version of The Witcher 3 if needed.
Players who move to newer hardware and Windows 11 will be in the officially supported environment for "Songs of the Past" and future performance testing.
