Volvo's best-selling model, the XC60, is set to receive another update. A camouflaged prototype spotted testing in Europe confirms that the Swedish automaker is investing further in its popular SUV, which has been on the market since 2017. This move comes even as the all-new electric EX60 joins the brand's lineup, indicating a strategy to offer both combustion and electric options concurrently.
The prototype's disguise suggests targeted design revisions focused on the front and rear, while the side profile largely stays familiar.
| Area | Current/Carryover | Updated Prototype |
|---|---|---|
| Headlights | Existing shape | Slimmer design |
| Grille | Current grille | Redesigned grille |
| Front bumper | Triangular side intakes | Retouched, different intake treatment |
| Side profile | Original 2017 design theme | Largely unchanged |
| Taillights | Current LED layout | Longer horizontal LED elements |
| Tailgate | Current rear treatment | Cleaner look with smaller license plate area |
| Rear bumper | Current design | Simplified styling |
The most significant changes are expected under the skin, as Volvo prepares the XC60 to meet the upcoming Euro 7 emission regulations. These are stricter rules aimed at reducing vehicle pollution. Reports suggest a heavily reworked plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is in development. A PHEV combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a battery that can be charged by plugging it in. While unconfirmed, rumors point to a potential all-electric driving range of 200 km (124 miles) for the updated PHEV model. This would be a substantial increase from the current model's 82 km (51 miles) of electric range.
200 km vs 82 km
If the rumor is accurate, the updated XC60 PHEV could more than double the current model's electric-only range.
Major changes to the interior are unlikely. The XC60 received a recent refresh that introduced a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen, a faster infotainment processor running on Google's system, and new cabin materials. The forthcoming update will continue to position the XC60 as a strong contender in the premium SUV market, sold alongside its all-electric counterpart, the EX60. This dual-offering strategy allows Volvo to cater to customers who are not yet ready to transition to a fully electric vehicle. The updated XC60 is anticipated to be officially revealed in the first half of 2027. In addition to its current production facilities, assembly of the XC60 is scheduled to begin at Volvo's plant in South Carolina in late 2026.
