This is a special edition of the BMW M3 created for the North American market. The name "Handschalter" is German for "manual shift," which is the car's main feature. It is equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and sends power only to the rear wheels. This model is designed for drivers who prioritize the engagement and control of a manual gearbox.
The standard all-wheel-drive M3 CS model has a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine that produces 543 horsepower. The Handschalter version has been adjusted to produce 473 horsepower, which is a reduction of 70 horsepower. Torque is also down from 479 lb-ft to 406 lb-ft. This change is necessary to match the power output to what the manual transmission can reliably handle. The focus is shifted from maximum power to the driving experience itself.
Beyond the manual transmission, BMW distinguishes this version through lower weight, model-specific tuning, and extensive carbon-fiber hardware.
The car’s appeal comes from a combination of lighter construction, chassis-focused setup changes, and premium performance parts carried over from more track-oriented models.
Lower weight
It is the lightest current M3 variant and can be nearly 75 pounds lighter than a standard rear-wheel-drive M3 with optional M carbon ceramic brakes.
Chassis tuning
BMW retuned the steering, chassis, and engine response, added unique wheel camber settings, and fitted the same shock absorbers used in the M4 CSL.
Carbon-fiber components
Carbon fiber appears throughout the car, including the roof, hood, front splitter, and bucket seats.
The Handschalter sits between the regular M3 sedan and the outgoing all-wheel-drive M3 CS on price, while trading outright acceleration for a more traditional enthusiast setup.
| Model | Starting price | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| M3 sedan | $79,300 | Base point of entry in the range |
| M3 CS Handschalter | $107,100 | Manual, rear-wheel drive, limited production |
| 2024 AWD M3 CS | $118,700 | More powerful all-wheel-drive CS model |
The M3 CS Handschalter is positioned for a specific buyer. Its 0-60 mph time is 4.1 seconds, which is slower than the more powerful automatic M3 CS. It is a limited-production vehicle aimed at driving enthusiasts and collectors. It offers a unique combination of the high-end CS trim with a traditional manual, rear-wheel-drive layout.
