BMW has officially unveiled the Vision Alpina concept, the first design study released since the German automaker fully acquired the esteemed tuning house. Presented at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the concept is a large, V8-powered grand touring coupe. This choice of powertrain signals a commitment to traditional performance values in an era increasingly focused on electrification.
The decision to equip the Vision Alpina with a V8 engine is significant. While specific details about the engine have not been released, it is expected to be a heavily reworked version of an existing BMW powerplant, likely the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. This approach aligns with Alpina's long-standing practice of modifying BMW engines to deliver a unique combination of high performance and refined smoothness. The focus is on creating a true grand tourer, a vehicle designed for high-speed, long-distance travel in maximum comfort, rather than a machine built solely for track performance.
A performance flagship should mainly chase aggressive, track-focused capability.
The Vision Alpina is positioned as a V8 grand tourer, emphasizing smooth power delivery, long-distance comfort, and refined speed.
The exterior design of the Vision Alpina is characterized by its subtlety and classic proportions. With a length of 5,199 mm, the vehicle has a commanding presence, defined by a long hood, a flowing coupe roofline, and a modern interpretation of the classic “shark nose” front end. The design intentionally avoids aggressive aerodynamic elements, instead favoring clean lines and sophisticated surfaces that pay homage to historic Alpina and BMW models. The look is completed with traditional 20-spoke Alpina wheels, a signature of the brand.

The concept’s length underscores its role as a large, presence-heavy grand touring coupe rather than a compact sports car.
Inside the cabin, the emphasis is on luxury and driver comfort. The layout is clean and uncluttered, integrating modern touchscreens with high-quality materials such as sustainably sourced leather and crystal switchgear. A key feature is the retention of Alpina’s signature “Comfort+” driving mode, which provides a softer, more relaxed suspension setup compared to standard BMW models. This reflects the core Alpina principle that “a comfortable driver is a faster driver,” prioritizing composure and ease of use during extended journeys.
The Vision Alpina concept serves as a statement of intent for the brand's future under BMW's direct ownership. It addresses concerns among enthusiasts that Alpina's unique identity might be diluted, demonstrating a respect for the brand's heritage of combining luxury with understated performance. While this coupe is a one-off design study, BMW has confirmed that the first production model from this new era will be based on the 7 Series platform and is expected to arrive next year. The Vision Alpina provides a clear preview of the sophisticated and performance-oriented direction the brand will take.
The ownership change sets the stage for a new in-house chapter while raising questions about how Alpina’s identity will be preserved.
Shown at Villa d’Este, the concept acts as a design study and a public statement of the brand’s intended balance of luxury and performance.
BMW says the first road-going model of this era will use the 7 Series platform, turning the concept’s message into a production-direction preview.
