Mazda's performance heritage is being reimagined for the electric era with a stunning concept for a revived Mazdaspeed 6. Dubbed the "Mazda 6e Spirit Racing," this vision ditches the combustion engine for a powerful dual-motor electric powertrain, promising exhilarating performance and a return to the brand's sporty roots.
Mazda's performance legacy, marked by icons like the Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6, RX-7, and RX-8, is being honored by the brand's quietly revived performance division, Mazda Spirit Racing (MSR). While no official production model is confirmed, this concept explores the potential of electrifying the Mazda 6e (also known as the EZ6).
The MSR concept builds upon the stylish Mazda 6e, which earned the World Car of the Year Design award for 2026. The design is refined with a lower, wider stance and aero-focused elements.
The concept adds multiple visual and aerodynamic changes to push the standard 6e into more serious performance-sedan territory.
Front-end changes
A closed-off grille with red accents, deeper bumper intakes, and a more pronounced splitter sharpen the nose.
Body stance
Pumped haunches, sculpted side skirts, and a lower, wider stance give the car a more planted look.
Wheels and rear aero
Larger dark-finish alloy wheels with performance tires, a larger deployable rear spoiler, smoked taillights, and a functional diffuser complete the package.
The cabin is transformed into a "sport luxury" environment. Upgraded Nappa leather seats feature deeper bolstering and RS-style honeycomb inserts. A thicker steering wheel, alloy pedals, and unique performance-oriented graphics enhance the driver-focused feel. Importantly, the concept reintroduces physical controls for the infotainment system, addressing customer feedback, and adds performance telemetry and configurable drive modes.
To overcome the standard 6e's uninspiring handling, the MSR concept proposes significant hardware upgrades. These include stiffer bushings, a lower ride height, recalibrated electric power steering, adaptive damping, thicker anti-roll bars, and larger 8-piston brakes. Electric motor torque vectoring would go beyond Mazda's current G-Vectoring Control, improving turn-in and exit speeds. Variable drive modes would range from comfort to track, featuring aggressive regenerative braking, simulated gear shifts, a boost mode, and a stability control system allowing for controlled rear-end slip.
At the heart of the MSR concept is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing an estimated 536 horsepower (400 kW) with adjustable rear bias. This setup is projected to achieve a 0-60 mph sprint in the low 3-second range. The concept utilizes the standard 78kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, offering a WLTP-rated range of up to 430 miles (550 km) and DC fast charging capabilities for a 10-80% charge in 24 minutes.
If realized, the Mazda 6e MSR would enter a crowded field of fast EV sedans that blend straight-line pace with daily usability.
