The BAW 212 is a new pickup truck from China that is being introduced to the European market. Imported by Germany's Indimo Automotive, it targets customers who require a vehicle with high off-road capability and robust technology that remains practical for daily use. Its arrival is notable as it fills a niche for a traditional, rugged pickup, a space left open since Land Rover did not create a pickup version of its latest Defender.
The vehicle's design is a mix of classic off-roaders. The cab and body sides are nearly identical to the previous-generation Land Rover Defender pickup. The front end, however, with its circular LED headlights, mimics the classic Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. The truck measures 215.3 inches (5,469 mm) long and 76.8 inches (1,950 mm) wide, with a wheelbase of 137.3 inches (3,488 mm). This makes it significantly larger than the old Defender pickups and only slightly shorter than the Jeep Gladiator.
The BAW 212 is equipped with a 2.3-liter turbodiesel engine that produces 188 hp (140 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. This engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Its off-road credentials come from its ladder-frame construction, a strong and traditional chassis design for trucks. It also features locking differentials for the front, center, and rear axles. This system allows the driver to force the wheels on an axle to spin at the same speed, providing maximum traction in difficult conditions like mud or rocks. The truck also has 9.8 inches (250 mm) of ground clearance.
The primary market advantage for the BAW 212 is its price. In Germany, pricing starts at €41,995, including the 19% VAT. This is considerably less than the starting prices for competitors like the Ford Ranger Double Cab and the Toyota Hilux. The BAW 212 aims to compete by offering serious off-road hardware and a generous list of standard features at a lower price point than established rivals.
Despite its utilitarian exterior, the cabin is equipped with modern technology. The driver is presented with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment system that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The European-spec model comes standard with features such as heated and ventilated front seats, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, an eight-speaker audio system, and a wireless smartphone charger. This level of equipment provides a degree of comfort not always found in rugged pickups.
