Kia Stinger Successor Planned as Electric Sports Sedan

The Kia Stinger, a performance sedan that earned a dedicated following, may see its spirit revived in a new form. Kia has indicated that a successor is under consideration, but it will be a significant departure from the original, embracing electric power and targeting a new generation of drivers.

A New Design Direction

The blueprint for this future model is the Vision Meta Turismo concept. This concept showcases Kia's "Opposites United" design language, which aims to blend contrasting elements for a dramatic look. Unlike the EV6 GT crossover, which did not fully capture the Stinger's audience, the Meta Turismo is a dedicated sports sedan. This signals Kia's intent to return to this vehicle category, with design chief Karim Habib stating the brand does not want to give up on cars like the Stinger.

The High Cost of Electric Performance

According to Habib, the primary obstacle to producing this Stinger successor is cost. High-performance electric vehicle technology is currently expensive, making it difficult to launch such a car at a competitive price point. The company is betting that as EV technology matures and costs decrease, a viable business case for the electric sports sedan will emerge. The project remains strategic, pending a more favorable market for high-performance EVs.

Redefining Enthusiasm for a New Era

The shift to an electric powertrain reflects a change in market focus. The original Stinger was praised for its engine options, including a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. However, Kia leadership recognizes that younger buyers may not prioritize traditional engine sounds. According to Kia's head of interior design, Jochen Paesen, the goal is to understand what emotionally engages the "gamer generation," who are more accustomed to the instant torque and digital experience of electric cars.

Stinger's Legacy and Future

The original Stinger was produced for just over five years before being discontinued in 2023, but its impact on Kia's brand image was significant. While a direct internal-combustion successor is not planned, the company is not abandoning the sports sedan concept. The future of Kia's performance flagship is electric, inspired by the Meta Turismo, and awaits a time when technology and market conditions align to make it a reality.
