Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its refreshed 2027 S-Class, a flagship sedan that prioritizes advanced software and a potent new V-8 engine. While the iconic S-Class has historically been the showcase for groundbreaking automotive technology, this iteration sees its new AI-powered operating system, MB:OS, debut on a more accessible model first. However, the S-Class retains its role as a technological spearhead with the introduction of an evolved V-8 engine designed for enhanced performance and emissions compliance.
The heart of the S580 4Matic is the new M177 Evo V-8 engine. This 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged unit features a flat-plane crankshaft, a design typically found in performance-oriented vehicles, which aids in emissions control by providing more even exhaust gas distribution. This design, combined with Miller-cycle combustion, allows the engine to produce 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque while meeting future emissions standards.
Despite its performance-oriented crankshaft, Mercedes-Benz has engineered the engine to retain a traditional V-8 burble, particularly at lower revs, through careful camshaft tuning. Balance shafts are employed to mitigate the inherent vibrations of a flat-plane crank, ensuring a refined luxury experience.
The 3.0-liter inline-six engine powering the S500 4Matic and S580e plug-in hybrid has also received updates. These include a more powerful electric supercharger, revised intake and exhaust ports, and updated camshaft profiles. The S500's inline-six now produces 442 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque (472 lb-ft with boost), while the S580e's combined output with its electric motor reaches 576 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.
Much of the S-Class's evolution lies in its software. The MB:OS operating system and the fourth-generation MBUX interface are central to the car's enhanced functionality. This system enables Level 2++ autonomous driving capabilities, with potential for future over-the-air updates, and introduces features like lane change assist and a sophisticated MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by generative AI.
The interior showcases the new MBUX Superscreen, a sweeping display that integrates a digital instrument cluster, central touchscreen, and a passenger display. While the design is impressive, some ergonomic choices, like the placement of the steering wheel relative to the instrument cluster, have drawn minor criticism.
On the road, the 2027 S-Class offers a serene and composed ride, enhanced by standard Airmatic suspension and optional E-Active Body Control. The updated suspension systems utilize cloud-based data from other MB:OS-equipped vehicles to proactively adjust damping. Standard rear-wheel steering contributes to improved agility, making the large sedan feel more nimble.
Externally, the S-Class receives subtle updates, including a larger grille with a star motif, new headlights with a twin-star signature, and updated taillights. The interior also sees revisions with new door trims, a redesigned center console, and updated HVAC vents.
Mercedes-Benz offers the S500 4Matic, S580 4Matic, and S580e plug-in hybrid. The S580e is noted as the quietest but also the heaviest and slowest, with some powertrain and brake pedal response inconsistencies. The S580 4Matic offers a thrilling V-8 soundtrack and linear power delivery. However, the S500 4Matic is highlighted as the pick of the bunch, offering improved refinement, strong low-to-midrange performance, and a marginally more alert feel through corners, likely at a more accessible price point.
