BMW has released a teaser image for a new concept car, the Vision BMW Alpina, scheduled for debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. This vehicle represents the first major project developed since BMW completed its acquisition of the Alpina brand in early 2024, following the initial purchase in 2022. The concept is expected to outline the future direction for Alpina under its new corporate structure.
Company officials have indicated a strategic shift for the Alpina brand. Future models will prioritize comfort, refinement, and luxury over direct performance competition with BMW's M division. The objective is to produce high-speed grand tourers designed for comfortable, long-distance travel. This approach aligns with Alpina's historical identity of creating discreet, powerful autobahn cruisers with supple ride quality and high-end interiors, rather than track-focused machines.
The teaser image reveals the silhouette of a low-slung coupe with a fastback design and long proportions. While details are limited, the lighting signatures appear unique and not sourced from an existing BMW model. This suggests BMW may allow Alpina to develop more bespoke designs, moving it away from its traditional role of modifying current BMW vehicles. Reports also indicate the involvement of Alex Innes, a former designer from Rolls-Royce's coachbuild division. This connection points toward a potential for highly personalized and exclusive design elements, elevating Alpina into a more distinct luxury space.
The choice to unveil the concept at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, an event that celebrates automotive design and elegance, underscores the new focus. The 'Vision' designation confirms the car is a concept study and not a production-ready model. However, it serves as a clear indicator of BMW's intent to position Alpina as a German equivalent to British grand touring brands like Bentley. The Vision BMW Alpina is set to redefine the sub-brand's role within the BMW Group, establishing a new benchmark for modern luxury and performance touring.
