Kia has confirmed its intention to produce a new flagship electric vehicle inspired by the Vision Meta Turismo concept, serving as a spiritual successor to the V6-powered Stinger. However, the company's design chief, Karim Habib, has indicated that the project is on hold until the production costs for a high-performance electric vehicle become more viable.
The Vision Meta Turismo concept introduces a new design direction for Kia, termed "Opposites United: Evolution." This philosophy builds upon the brand's current design language, first seen on the EV6, but aims for a more futuristic feel focused on improving the user experience. The concept is a four-door GT, or Grand Tourer, built on a new, dedicated electric vehicle platform. Its striking appearance is intended to appeal to a younger, tech-savvy demographic, described by the company as the "gamer generation." This move also signals Kia's intent to diversify its lineup beyond its successful range of SUVs.
Details on the powertrain remain conceptual, but the vehicle is confirmed to be a "pure EV," meaning it operates solely on electric power without a gasoline engine. The model is positioned as a high-performance vehicle, which is the primary factor contributing to its current production delay. The technology and components required for a high-performance electric GT are presently expensive, making the final retail price a strategic concern for the brand. Kia is betting on the continued growth of the EV market and a future reduction in component costs to make the project feasible.
The planned production model aims to fill the void left by the Stinger, occupying the role of a halo sports sedan for the brand. It would compete in the premium electric GT segment. The main obstacle is purely financial. According to Habib, the price of developing and building a high-performance EV is what is slowing down the process. The company is waiting for a market that is more receptive to such a vehicle at a price point that is both profitable for Kia and acceptable to consumers. Reports suggest that a model that is "90% production-ready" has already been developed, indicating that the design and engineering work is substantially complete.
While the flagship GT is on pause, the "Opposites United: Evolution" design language is expected to debut on other models sooner. The first vehicle influenced by this new design is anticipated to be an electric city car, potentially named the EV1, which could serve as an electric alternative to the Picanto. This suggests Kia is committed to its new design direction across its entire vehicle portfolio. The eventual release of the Stinger's successor depends on market dynamics and technological cost reductions, but the project remains a clear goal for the brand's future.
